Area Calculator — room size and flooring or paint cost

This area calculator finds the area of a rectangular room or surface from its length and width, and works out the cost to cover it if you enter a price. Switch between meters and feet, and the result shows the area in both units so you can order materials with confidence.

How to measure a room

Measure the length and the longest width in a straight line, in the same unit. For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles, work out each area and add them together. Add a little extra — usually 5–10% — for cuts, waste and future repairs.

Flooring, tiles and paint

Enter a price per square meter or square foot to estimate the material cost — handy for laminate, carpet, tiles or turf. For paint, one area figure covers one coat of one wall or the floor; multiply by the number of coats, and remember most rooms need two.

Metric and imperial

One square meter is about 10.76 square feet, because a meter is roughly 3.28 feet and area grows with the square. The calculator converts automatically, so you can measure in meters but buy flooring sold by the square foot, or the other way round.

How it is calculated

Area is simply length × width for a rectangle. To convert, the tool uses the exact factor 1 square foot = 0.09290304 square meters. Cost is the area multiplied by your price per unit. Results are rounded for display; measure carefully, as a small error in length or width changes the area more than you might expect.

Example

A room 4 meters long and 5 meters wide is 20 m² (about 215 ft²). At a flooring price of 25 per square meter, covering it costs 500 — before adding a margin for offcuts.

FAQ

How do I calculate the area of a room?

Multiply the length by the width in the same unit. A 4 by 5 meter room is 20 square meters. For odd shapes, split into rectangles and add the areas.

How much flooring should I buy?

Take the area and add 5–10% for cuts and waste, then buy that amount. Enter a price per square meter or foot to see the total cost.

How do I convert square meters to square feet?

Multiply square meters by 10.76 (or divide square feet by 10.76). The calculator shows both automatically when you switch units.

Does it work for paint?

Yes — the area equals one coat on one surface. Most walls and ceilings need two coats, so double the paint, and check the coverage on the tin.

Can I measure an L-shaped room?

Split it into rectangles, calculate each with the tool, and add the results together for the total area.
