FAQ

How is the tip amount calculated?

The tip is a percentage of the bill you choose. We multiply the bill by that percentage, then add it to the total.

How much should I tip in the US?

In the United States, 15–20% is standard for table service. 18–20% is common for good service; some leave more for excellent service.

How much should I tip in the UK, Canada or Australia?

In the UK, 10–12.5% is typical if service isn't included. In Canada, 15–20% is standard. In Australia, tipping is optional — around 10% for great service.

Is tipping expected in Germany, the Netherlands or Belgium?

In these countries service is included in the price. Rounding up or leaving 5–10% for good service is appreciated but not obligatory.

How do I split the bill fairly?

Enter the total bill and tip, then use the counter to set how many people are splitting — the app divides the total evenly.

Tip Calculator — work out gratuity in seconds

A tip calculator takes the guesswork out of paying the bill. Enter your bill amount, choose a tip percentage, and instantly see the tip, the new total, and the amount per person if you are splitting the check. It works for restaurants, cafés, bars, taxis, food delivery and hair salons.

How to use the tip calculator

Type the bill total, tap a preset (10%, 15%, 18% or 20%) or enter your own percentage, then use the counter to set how many people are sharing. Everything updates as you type — there is no button to press.

Example

On an $80 bill with a 20% tip, the tip is $16 and the total is $96. Split between four people, that is $24 each.

Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides differ. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the full total including tax — the difference is usually small. This calculator applies your chosen percentage to whatever figure you type, so enter the subtotal if you prefer to tip on the pre-tax amount.

Common tipping mistakes

Check whether a service charge has already been added — this is common for large groups, and tipping again means paying twice. On card terminals the suggested tip is sometimes calculated on the total including tax. And remember that in many countries tipping is optional, not expected.

Quick mental-math reference

For a fast estimate, find 10% by moving the decimal one place, then adjust: on $50, 10% is $5, so 20% is $10 and 15% is $7.50. On $100, 15% is $15, 18% is $18 and 20% is $20.
